the economy's slow growth. the unemployment rate in michigan is over the national average and things look much worse in the detroit metro area. unemployment there is nearing 16%. kristen welker is live for us at the white house. kristen, the president right now on board air force one and is touching down soon. what can we expect to hear from him? >> white house officials say the president will talk about the importance of creating a strong middle class to this economic recovery. he'll also likely challenge democrats and republicans to get behind that big jobs plan that you just mentioned that he's going to roll out on thursday. we don't know specifically what's going to be in the plan, i can tell you a couple of things that have been under consideration including extending payroll tax breaks as well as investing in infrastructure, green energy projects and also providing tax breaks for companies who hire new employees. now the community today that will be listening to the president speak thousands of union workers will of course be listening very closely to his words today and again on thursda

obama will spend his labor day in michigan a state hard hit by employment. in his annual address, the president is expected to preview his jobs plan to union workers and their families in detroit. he'll unveil his entire plan in a speech on thursday night. the administration says it will lay out a series of steps that congress could act upon, including transportation and infrastructure initiatives. initiatives to help homeowners and tax breaks to support new hires. >> if you are not hiring, you're unpatriotic according to the international brotherhood of teamers james hoffa. on the state of the union, hoffa called apple, general electric and pfizer unpatriotic for opening factories and stores overseas instead of investing in employment right here in the united states. he said, big companies have a responsibility to get americans back to work and if they aren't doing that, president obama should call them out. >> i think the president should challenge the patriotism of these american corporations that are sitting on the sidelines saying why do we have high unemployment but i'm not

the jobs numbers and this city suffering worst than most. unemployment here is at -- well, in michigan it's at 10.9%, but in detroit it's almost at 16%. over 50% are among the long-term unemployed. why does that matter in this is a state that the president won by 17 points. and now his approval rating in the state is at 34%. those are bismol numbers, ted. he has to get the numbers up if he hopes to win re-election. we will see the president here not just today but a lot in the next year as he campaigns for re-election. >> any hint on what he will talk about today and specifically if there will be any sneak peek into what he will deliver on thursday in terms of his plan? >> in terms of the plan we will hear him talk about the fact that he will press for measures that had bipartisan support in the past. this is a big theme for the white house, the kinds of initiatives he is proposing to increase job employment in this country, and they have had the support of republicans previously so should again. i know that we will have him talk about the importance of having a strong middle class for ec

dropped him at the university of michigan for debate camp for three weeks and thought he would be okay. wrong. he called me up two days later and felt dumb. he said the other kids at camp were far ahead of him and started yelling at me for not getting him in a better school. problem is, that he's already in the best school in our city. he says, i don't know what they're preparing us for but it's not college. my poor kid has discovered something we've known for years, not all school districts are created equal. there are at love factors for this, of course. but the one i find most telling is the correlation between poverty and academic achievement. according to the u.s. census bureau, grand rapids, michigan, has a 28.9% poverty rate amongst school age children. only 30% of students who take the michigan exam were proficient in math, 43% proficient in reading. when you look at the poorer cities in my state you'll find some numbers below 10%. conversely, the 10 wealthiest districts have scores in the mid 70s up to 90. how is that leaving no child behind? this correlation, not unique to mi
